Janet D. Callahan of Hancock Estabrook, LLP becomes first female managing partner of a major law firm in Syracuse, N.Y.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. Janet D. Callahan has been elected managing partner by the partnership of Hancock Estabrook, LLP. She is the first woman to be elected managing partner of a major law firm in Syracuse, N.Y., and one of the first in Upstate New York.
Callahan joined the firm in 1984 and became a partner in 1989. She heads the firm’s Litigation and Appellate practice groups and was the first woman elected to the firm’s Executive Committee, serving as a member of that committee since 2003. Callahan was named a New York Super Lawyer in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and was honored with the Best Lawyer in America award in 2010. She received her Juris Doctor degree from Albany Law School of Union University and her undergraduate degree in psychology and special education magna cum laude from the State University of New York at Geneseo.
Callahan is a frequent lecturer for state and local bar associations and professional organizations, and has authored articles for the Women’s Bar News of the State of New York and the Central New York edition of M.D. News. She has been a featured speaker at the annual fall conference for the Association of Justices of the Supreme Court of the State of New York and served as a panelist for the “Women on the Move 2008” program of the New York State Bar Association. Callahan is a member of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, the Onondaga County Bar Association and the Central New York Women’s Bar Association, and she participates in the Onondaga County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project. She is an investigator for the Onondaga County Bar Association Grievance Committee. Callahan is also on the board of the Fayetteville Senior Center and has been involved in many other charitable organizations.
